In the desert, the sun has a force not felt in the city. I began working on Pull Up the Sun in Oakland, but it wasn’t until I moved to Wonder Valley that it took on its current form as music for an imaginary winter solstice ritual: a series of tableaux anchored by a slow melodic theme.

Pull Up the Sun is tuned in 7-limit just intonation, which means that its intervals are tuned by ratios, instead of the standard Western system that divides the octave into twelve equal irrational parts. It also contains pitches that don’t have a direct analog in the usual chromatic scale. I synthesized its sounds using the computer music language Supercollider and a Eurorack modular system, with no samples or recordings.
